In Louisiana in the 1940s, a young black man name Jefferson (Mekhi Phifer) sits on death row, condemned for a murder he witnessed but did not commit. Meanwhile, teacher Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle) has recently returned to the South with a collage education, and is contemplating his future while teaching the local children . His meetings to counsel the inmate will transform them both. The two men forge a bond, struggling to learn the true meaning of pride in life and dignity in death. Some lessons are never too late to learn.
