The young official Yam Tin-wah is in love with the singer Mui Yuk-lin. Yam's mother Fong tests Yuk-lin in all sorts of ways and proves her to be a decent person, so she allows the two to get married. Tin-wah's cousin Fong Sze-ching also loves Yuk-lin. When he learns of their marriage, he becomes angry and tries to sow a discord between Fong and Yuk-lin. Yuk-lin is punished to sleep in the pigsty and do heavy-duty work. Tin-wah has to report duty in the capital and is then transferred to work in the border for a number of years. Yuk-lin gives birth to a son Po-on. When Po-on has grown up, Sze-ching once again incites Fong. Fong kicks Yuk-lin out of the family under the pretext that she has an affair with somebody else. Po-on flees to the nunnery where his mother retreats. They live a poor life there. When Tin-wah returns home, his mother forces him to write a letter for divorce. Tin-wah does not believe that Yuk-lin has an affair with somebody else and he looks for her everywhere. They meet again but Yuk-lin cannot forgive Tin-wah. However, for the future of Po-on, she lets Tin-wah take their son home. Yuk-lin decides to become a nun. On knowing this, Tin-wah rushed to the nunneryto stop her from doing so in spite of his mother's order. He bumps into the poor and very sick Sze-ching at the gate of the nunnery and finds out the truth. His mother arrives on the spot at the moment and all are reconciled.
