Janine (Lydie Denier), a young French woman, accepts an au pair position with Dr. Keith Bauer (Alex McArthur) and his wife Melanie (Kathleen Quinlan) in America. Ignoring protests from her sister Paula (Anne Ramsay). Melanie befriends her young employee. One afternoon, Paula witnesses Keith and Janine making love. This accidental discovery proves to become a fatal insight - as Paula is found dead shortly thereafter. After Paula's death, Melanie's best friend and business partner, Laney (Teri Garr)is approached by Duparc (Charles Martin Smith), a private detective who confides that Paula hired him to trail Keith and Janine. Laney discovers that Keith had been married once before - his previous wife dying prematurely. Laney becomes highly suspicious of Keith.
