Roy (Harvey Keitel), a smart thief who has successfully created a life of anonymity for himself in the remote Midwest, succumbs to an emotional plea and agrees to help his brother Lee (Timothy Hutton) to carry out an elaborate jewelry robbery in Palm Springs. Lee has masterminded his one last heist before getting out of the city to start a new life. For their "wheelman", Lee brings in the unpredictable Skip Kovich (Stephen Dorff) who is "smart?? sleep-deprived?? impatient and erratic." When Skip suggests that if the heist is successful, they should plan another, Roy is skeptical?? and suspcious. Instinctively, he is not keen on strangers, and when it comes to Skip, he "doesn't like what's there at all." When Lee is murdered, Roy moves savagely into the fray to take revenge on the man who betrayed him and avenge his death.
