The friendly and fascinating beluga whale spends most of its life out in the oceans that surround the arctic ice cap. For a few months each summer though, they gather in the warm shallows to turn the waters into a churning sea of white. These tight gatherings are an ideal opportuity to observe the beluga's complex social structure. While exhibiting the most diverse vocal repertoire of any whale, the behavior of belugas has facets and complexities that scientists have became aware of only recently.
